The Riches of the Destitute

. . . being justified freely by His grace . . .
—Romans 3:24

The gospel of the grace of God awakens an intense longing in human souls and an equally intense resentment,
because the truth that it reveals is not palatable or easy to swallow.
There is a certain pride in people that causes them to give and give,
but to come and accept a gift is another thing.

I will give my life to martyrdom;
I will dedicate my life to service—
I will do anything.

But do not humiliate me to the level of the most hell-deserving sinner
and tell me that all I have to do is accept the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.

We have to realize that we cannot earn or win anything from God through our own efforts.
We must either receive it as a gift or do without it.
The greatest spiritual blessing we receive is when we come to the knowledge that we are destitute.
Until we get there, our Lord is powerless.

He can do nothing for us as long as we think we are sufficient in and of ourselves.
We must enter into His kingdom through the door of destitution.
As long as we are “rich,” particularly in the area of pride or independence,
God can do nothing for us.
It is only when we get hungry spiritually that we receive the Holy Spirit.

The gift of the essential nature of God is placed and made effective in us by the Holy Spirit.
He imparts to us the quickening life of Jesus, making us truly alive.
He takes that which was “beyond” us and places it “within” us.
And immediately, once “the beyond” has come “within,” it rises up to “the above,” and we are lifted into the kingdom where Jesus lives and reigns (see John 3:5 ).

Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.” -John 3:5-

지난 목요일, 추수감사절 행사를 마치고 집으로 돌아와 강충원장로님의 설교말씀을 들었다.
(강장로님의 열혈팬인 종혜 덕에 요즘 집에서 장로님 설교를 자주 듣고 있다.)
총 여섯 번에 걸쳐 Seven Deadly Sins을 다룬 설교였는데, 첫 주제는 Pride, 특히 영적 교만에 대한 내용이었다.

처음 제목을 보고 듣기 시작했을 때만해도 사실 말씀에 대한 큰 기대는 하지 않았다.
교만, 얼마나 진부한 주제인가. 교만이 좋지 않다는 정도는 누구나 익히 알고 있지 않은가.
그런 교만에 대한 설교를 애써 들으려 한다는 사실이 내가 얼마나 겸손하며 더 겸손해지기를 바라는가를 보여주는 것 같았다.

하지만 막상 설교가 시작되고 내 생각이 잘못 되었음을 알게되는데는 그리 오랜 시간이 필요치 않았다.
장로님께서 교만에 대하여 하나씩 이야기 꺼내 놓으실 때마다
내 마음은 점점 무너져가고 마음 깊은 곳에서부터 수치심이 물밀듯이 밀려왔다.
이윽고 설교 말씀이 끝날 무렵, 나는 오열하고 말았다.
나의 희생과 성실, 관용, 겸손을 내세워 남을 정죄하며 스스로와 하나님을 기만했던 모습이 떠올랐을 때,
내겐 더 이상 소망이 없다고 느껴졌고 그 때서야 비로소 전적으로 주님의 은혜를 구하게 되었다.
그리고 느낄 수 있었던 그 높은 곳에서 이 낮은 나에게 임재하신 주님의 은혜와 사랑.

기대치 않았던 곳에서 내게 말씀하시고 또 다른 ‘하나님을 아는 지혜’를 주신 주님께 너무도 감사했던 하루였다.

며칠 전에도 이야기 했지만 요즘 끊이지 않는 하나님의 은혜와 인도하심을 체험하며 살고 있다.
언제나 ‘이보다 더 좋을 수가 있을까’ 싶을 때마다 더 큰 은혜로 부어주시는 하나님을 체험하며
‘하나님으로부터 위대한 일을 기대하라. 그리고 하나님을 위해 위대한 일을 계획하라.’
는 윌리엄 케리의 말을 다시 한 번 묵상해 본다.

마음으로 느낀 것을 글로 옮기는 것은 정말 어려운 일이구나.
가슴이 벅차도록 표현하고 싶은게 많았는데, 막상 쓰기 시작해보니 도무지 글이 되질 않는다.
하지만 쓰면 쓸수록 더 나아지리라 믿으며 오늘은 이만 줄인다.

The seven deadly sins, also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins, were first introduced by St. Gregory the Great(ca. 540 – March 12, 604) in “Moralia in Job.”

Pride is excessive belief in one’s own abilities, that interferes with the individual’s recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

Envy is the desire for others’ traits, status, abilities, or situation.

Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.

Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.

Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.

Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.
